Riad Zamzam is situated in the North Medina, a very authentic part of the old Medina, called Zaouia Sidi Bel Abbess (Zaouia means Islamic school) and Sidi (Sir Bel Abbass). Local taxis will know the drop off point called ‘Kbour chour’ or ‘Bab Tagherzout’. Once you are 5 minutes away, or have arrived, you should call the riad for someone to come and meet you.
Famous History
Sidi Bel abbes (Xiith century) is the most famous saint of Marrakech. He was a former teacher completely devoted to Islam, who helped the beggars and blind people. The Medersa (Quranic school) and the mosque date to1605, the fountain and the Zaouia (holy shrine where the followers devote themselves to prayer) are older. This is the main mosque that royalty will come to when visiting Marrakech.
You may visit the central courtyard of this pretty Zaouia with its fountain, fancy carved plasterwork and hand-cut Moroccan tiles. You may be asked to make a donation to the Zaouia as the blind are still fed there every evening. This forms part of your route into the Medina and the souks.
Riad Zamzam is just a 20 minute walk from the Marrakech Souks and Jemaa El Fnaa. We are located next to a road that leads to the Palmeraie and next to Marrakech's famous Yacout Restaurant. We are 5 minutes taxi, or a 15 minute walk, to the YSL Museum and Majorelle Gardens.
