Advice for visitors

Money

It is a good idea to bring a couple of bank cards in case you have any problems and let your bank know you are coming to Morocco as many banks may block your card, which can be really frustrating when you are about to pay for a much deliberated purchase or dinner at the end of the evening.

Cash is king in Morocco! Moroccan Dirham (dh) is a closed currency so you will not be able to exchange currency prior to your arrival in the country. You can get cash at the airport although we recommend you watch the rate and the commission. Otherwise there are cash points in the Gueliz (new town), Place des Epices in the middle of the Medina near the carpet souk and some also in the Jemaa El Fnaa. It is a good idea to leave your money in the safe at Zamzam and just take what you need or draw your cash as and when you need to pay for something. Most people will also take hard currency such as euros, dollars and sterling if you have it.

Tips

Tipping is customary (but not mandatory) in Morocco to show your appreciation for good service. At Riad Zamzam we have a tip box in the office which is shared between the staff by Imane (Manageress). It is a good idea to have 20dh notes for people who have really helped you and also small change for photos or coffee tip.
